Mr. Belding

My name is Mark Belding and I'm in my seventh year as the director of bands at Santo ISD. I teach music from 4th-12th grades, including the Award-Winning Wildcat Marching Band! Music is an amazing learning tool for your child and will create lifelong memories and skills for students of all ages and learning types. Multiple studies have shown learning a musical instrument leads to improved performance in math and reading.

    11/22

    11/29

    12/6

    12/13

All dates subject to change based on UIL Football playoff results

    4th Grade

4th grade students learn the building block of music including rhythm, pitch, reading and writing music. We learn about all the different families of instruments and how they work. Students are given the opportunity to earn recorders during the first 6-weeks and will learn how to play the instruments for the rest of the year.

    5th Grade

5th grade students make up the Santo elementary beginning band Students will learn how to make characteristic sounds and will be able to play rudimentary pieces together. Every year, the beginning band performs and sightreads at the Cisco College Music Festival in March.

    6th Grade

The intermediate band is made up of 2nd year band students. Students will learn concepts such as scales, improved range, and more technical challenges than those in 5th grade. Intermediate band students have the opportunity to audition for the percussion section, which is only available for a select number of students. The intermediate band goes as a non varsity MS group to Cisco College Music Festival at the end of the year.

    Junior High Band

The Santo ISD Junior High Band consists of 7th and 8th grade students and is a UIL class C performing ensemble. Students will begin to learn more challenging music and will be expected to practice on a regular basis to meet expectations of performance. Students in this band may also take part in the all region audition process in the fall. The JH band performs every year at UIL concert/sightreading contest.

Incoming 7th grade students who play Flute, Clarinet, Alto Saxophone, and Trumpet will need to rent or buy their own instrument for JH band. There are affordable rental options or rent to own options at our supplier ALP music in Stephenville TX. If buying or renting would create a financial hardship, we have limited numbers of school-owned instruments available. If this is a need please contact me at mbelidng@santoisd.net to check for availability. School-owned instruments will be available on a first come first serve basis. 8th grade students who used one of the school owned instruments listed above last year are strongly encouraged to rent or buy their own since our numbers are growing and inventory will be limited.

The Santo Wildcat band is the premiere performing ensemble at Santo ISD. In the fall, students take part in marching band which includes performing at varsity football games and competing at competitions including UIL marching. Students in the marching band gain lifelong experiences and learn a marching production at the highest standards in the state of Texas. Students in the Wildcat Band are also eligible to compete in the All state process in the fall and Solo ensemble competition in the spring. Please see below for important rehearsal/performance dates of the HS marching band:

The wildcat band travels to all varsity football games to support Santo athletics and entertain fans.

    Music Appreciation

Students will learn the theory and history of Western music and will gain the knowledge and tools to understand and create their own musical compositions. This will be a very involved music course with many mathmatical, historical, and creative outlets and expectations.
